- A very popular substance in the 19th century
Laudanum, created by the alchemist Paracelsus in the 16th century, is a substance made from opium, saffron and white wine, among other things, which was believed in ancient times to cure all ills, due to its own sedative effects. of opium (Historia del medicamento, n.d.). It was very popular until the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, it was used for any type of pain, from children's teeth coming out to terminally ill patients. Its active principle was morphine, codeine and narcotine (DeJaime Lorén, 2010). Laudanum today is almost in disuse. Opioids, the name given to opium-derived drugs, have side effects that can be dangerous, such as slowing heart and breathing rates (Krieger, 2018), for this reason, they are currently used only under medical supervision.
