The Principality of Seborga

The Principality of Seborga
  • An ancient nation located in the Italian Republic

Seborga began to organize itself from the time of the Roman Empire, when around 250 BC. the then
western Liguria was conquered by the empire and classified as burgas by this (Principato di Seborga,
s.f.). After Roman rule, the ancient Liguria was invaded by other peoples, such as the Barbarians, Ostrogoths and Byzantines, but in the end Seborga, was in charge of the mojos of Sant'Onorato di Lerino or Saint Honorato of Lerins (Wiki Micronaciones, n.d.) and by the authorization of the Pope Gregory VII, could use the title of Princes of Seborga.
Later, more specifically in 1697, Prince Giuseppe de Meyronnet, established an agreement with the Duke of Savoy Vittorio Amedeo II, although with problems caused by the Republic of Genoa, which was interested in appropriating Seborga to use it as an enclave.
In the year 1729, in the presence of the lawyer Francesco Lea, representative of the King of Sardinia, Benoît de Benoît, treasurer of the abbey of Lerinese and Lambert Jordany, dean of the abbey of Lerinese, the last two representing Prince Fause de Ballon, they signed the writing of Seborga in Paris, but without stipulating that the King of Cerdeña acquired the title of Prince of Seborga or that he had sovereignty over this territory.
There is no document proving that Seborga is part of the former Republic of Genoa, or of the Kingdom of Italy or of the Italian Republic created in 1946, even in 1934, Benito Mussolini signed a document in which he says the Principality of Seborga does not belong to Italy (Chuet-Missé, 2017; Martinezld, 2016).
The current principality of Seborga, with Prince Giorgio Carbone as its first prince, under the name of Giorgio I, appears on May 14, 1963, was the same prince, who retakes the old Seborga flag and the slogan "Sub Umbra Sedi " The prince ratifies himself as sovereign upon being re-elected for life by the elections of September 24, 1995. Prince Giorgio I ceases to exist because of an illness on November 25, 2009 and Marcello Menegatto succeeds him, under the name of Prince Marcello I, this also under elections, which makes the Principality of Seborga into an elective monarchy.
