The creator of utilitarianism
- About this philosophy and Jeremy Bentham
Utilitarianism is a philosophical theory (Calderón, n.d.), which in short, seeks the pleasure or welfare of the largest number of people, this being its moral principle (Anderson, 2004). This theory was proposed by philosophers such as John Stuart Mill or Jeremy Bentham, the latter being the first to formulate this thought. This thinker was born in 1748 and died in 1832 (Biografías y Vidas, n.d.; Kolakowski, 1966), he was very intelligent from his childhood, at an early age he knew how to play the violin and later, he studied to be a lawyer, a career who exercised very little time since later he devoted himself to the academic area. Among his achievements outside philosophy are the panopticon (Romero, 2002), a surveillance system that allowed people a wide range of vision without being detected. One of his most important contributions in the academic area was the foundation of the University College of London. As a curiosity, Bentham also devised an embalming system to create, the ones called by him, autoíconos, this technique was applied to Bentham himself and is currently in the university he founded.
