What is life?

What is life?
  • We talk about the different existing concepts of life

The concept of life has been changing over time (Hernández, 2012; Nahle, 2006), in antiquity life was given to everything that had movement, then this was given to everything that had a soul, a concept that has also changed, since during part of the History, there have been creatures that were not given soul, as for example to some animals, but it was given soul to some inanimate objects, such as rocks.
Currently the consensus is that life
(Pérez Porto & Merino, 2013) is granted to certain structured organisms, which can self-regulate, survive and reproduce, whose minimum unit is the cell. This consensus does not stop being controversial, since when removing points, like for example the one of the cell or the one of the reproduction, there are creatures that can fulfill with the rest of the characteristics, like the virus or a hypothetical robotic life (CdeCiencia, 2015).
