The Voyager Golden Records

• Record with the sounds of the world thrown into space 

 

As with the Pioneer probes (Nocetti, 2018), the Voyager carry material inside with the intention of being found with extraterrestrial beings (NASA, 2018; Voyager Golden Record, n.d.). These probes were launched into space in 1977 and are currently on the edge of the solar system. The discs they carry are made of gold, they come with the instructions on how to reproduce them and they include different sounds of the planet earth, among them human speech in different languages, music and atmospheres (JPL, n.d.). In addition to the gold album 'The Sound of Earth', photographs were attached to Voyager, all this is protected by an aluminum frame (Hery, 2015). It should be noted that the great scientific popularizer Carl Sagan was part of this project.
