Desde que existe el fenómeno OVNI, han existido varios grupos al rededor, desde los más serios, que se dedican a estudiar estos avistamientos, hasta los más peligrosos, como es el caso de las sectas (Martinez, 2016). Entre las sectas, hay diversos tipos, incluídos movimiento tan curiosos como el del ocultismo NAZI (Paperblog, 2013), siempre siguen a un supuesto líder contactado y en algunos casos son prácticamente inofensivas (International Raelian Movement, s.f.), pero en otros han llegado incluso al suicidio colectivo de sus integrantes (Krajicek, 2017).
