North Sentinel Island

North Sentinel Island
  • About this mysterious island

It is a mysterious (20 Minutos, 2018; Rolloid, 2018) island under the jurisdiction of the government of India (Revelo, 2015: Excelsior, 2015), it is inhabited by hostile natives who do not let anyone in, few people (Riaño, 2018) in the history of humanity have achieved a friendly encounter with this tribe, most of those who try to approach are received with a rain of arrows, stones and death threats. This island was already known at the time of Marco Polo, he described its inhabitants as cruel and violent people, he also warned that anyone who approached would end up being eaten by cannibals (Vasco, 2015). The entrance to the North Sentinel Island is prohibited by the government of India, this to protect the natives from diseases and possible visitors from certain death (Perfil, 2018). Among the times that the island has been visited without major problems, are the exploration through helicopters for the year 2004, this to know the status of its inhabitants after the tsunami, said helicopter was filled with arrows. Some people like John Allan Chau have not been so lucky, in a first attempt to visit the island, he had to flee by canoe, in his second attempt, he had to swim with an arrow stuck in his back and a third attempt did not survive to tell, dying in 2018 (Resolviendo la incógnita, 2018). The little that is known about sentinelese, is that they speak an unknown language and could be descendants of humans who arrived 60,000 years ago in that area (Pereyra, 2013). A survivor who was inside the Island was Maurice Vidal Portman, although he did an anthropological study in the 19th century, he was guilty of the kidnapping of several people, in a lecture to a woman and four children, and in another occasion, to a couple of Elders and a child. They kept them several days on the sailing schooner Constance, the woman and one of the children were returned to the island with gifts, then the elderly couple died quickly and returned to the island with more gifts to the four surviving children. In the twentieth century the anthropologist Trilok Nath Pandit, managed to make a friendly contact with the sentinelese in 1991 (RT, 2018), although he says that when approaching the island, a young sentinel was threatening him with a knife, indicating that he would cut his head (Natarajan, 2018). Other tribes such as the Jarawas, unlike sentineleces, ceased to be hostile in 1994, but because of this, human safaris have been made and their population has declined, for the early twenty-first century, there are barely around 300 people left (Galán, 2010).

"The only known photograph of what is thought to be a Jangil communal hut, as taken in the 1890s on Rutland Island, probably by M.V. Portman. The structure is remarkably similar to the Sentineli communal hut [...]. Portman never met more than a very few Jangil [...]. The figures barely discernible in the hut are Great Andamanese trackers that accompanied Portman on most of his excursions and that he used freely to pose as "Jarawas "and "Sentinelis "when the need arose for "realistic" photographs." Citation from Shelter (of Jangil people), by George Weber
