Types of microphones

Types of microphones
  • The most common types of microphones

There are different types of microphones (AprendeApincharM煤sica, n.d.; Musicopolix, 2015), each with its own timbre, polar pattern, form of operation and features. Not all microphones are designed for the musical area or for voices, in the video the most common microphones and other not so common ones are shown.

1) The most common is the dynamic microphone, which works on the basis of a mobile coil and a magnet, unlike other types of microphone does not need external power to operate, they are usually connected via XLR cable and are of cardiode polar pattern.

2) The condenser microphone works on the basis of a fixed plate and a mobile plate that generates general voltage variations, when working in this way, it is a microphone that needs external power, this is known as phantom power and grants +48v, there are condenser microphones designed for musical and vocal recordings, which are generally of a frequency response that is factory equalized and of cardiode polar pattern, other of these microphones can be manufactured for environmental measurement work or scientific work, they are usually flat response and their pattern Polar can be omnidirectional or cardiode.

3) The electet type microphone is a small condenser microphone that uses an electrode and is usually the receiver that is inside mobile devices such as video cameras, conventional cell phones or smartphones.

4) Tape microphones are known for their warmer response compared to the rest, these devices were widely used in the 1950s.

3) Lapel or lavalier microphones, are the small devices normally used in television or theater to be easy to hide.

Other types of transducers that can also be considered microphones, are the capsules of the instruments, these can be magnetic or piezoelectric (Pastillas de guitarra, n.d.; Mackay, 2018), there are also acoustic transducers, such as stethoscopes used in the area of medicine, since these take and amplify a sound signal (Nocetti, 2014).
